Depicting the procession of an important gentleman in a horse drawn carriage being escorted by saber wielding escorts on horseback and heralded by bugle playing servants on foot. From the end of the seventeenth century and through the 18th century painted and printed chintz became extremely fashionable for costume. This panel most probably came from a petticoat, intended for the patterned underskirts in Holland or England worn with open robes of the period. Exquisitely worked panels such as these were ordered in Europe and brought back via the East India Companies. The western influences can clearly be seen in the costumes worn by the figures, which, especially of the central figure drawn in a carriage, are very European. European hunting dogs also portray the western influence. However the Moghul influences can be seen through the men following the carriage, on horseback with their Persian sabers drawn and wearing Persian style hats.
