An exquisite late 19th /early 20th C. Japanese pilgrim's robe. The Kukai pilgrims who go to Shikoku Island wear a special linen coat bearing the stamps of the Buddhist shrines visited by them, in this case there are eighty five stamps. And down the centre a mantra written in Sumi ink.
